Displaced resident evicted, left without shelter

I am writing as a displaced individual affected by the Maui fire disaster, currently residing in a Red Cross/safe harbor hotel.

I have heard Gov. Josh Green emphasize on multiple occasions that displaced individuals will not be forcibly evicted and left without shelter. Unfortunately, this assertion seems to contradict the recent developments.

Many of us were initially assured of extended shelter beyond Sept. 28th, but regrettably, I received notice just a week ago that we must vacate the premises.

My situation has been particularly challenging as I have been out of work since June due to a severe bout of COVID-19, which subsequently led to a gastrointestinal infection and an electrolyte imbalance, resulting in hospitalization. I am still under the care of a medical professional and have not fully recovered.

I have recently resumed work, but my livelihood depends entirely on an online platform. Without adequate shelter, access to WiFi, reliable power, and a secure living environment, I risk losing my employment and becoming unemployed once more.

While I did not lose a home in the disaster, I am troubled by the way I and others in my situation are being treated, seemingly as second-class citizens due to our lack of homeownership.

The only alternative that has been presented to me, after extensive searching on various agency websites and numerous phone calls, is relocation to a tent city near the airport. While this may technically fulfill Green’s stated obligations, it lacks compassion and empathy.
