Kyle Sanches lands at home as King Kekaulike football coach

February 9, 2013 - Robert Collias
Kyle Sanches told me Friday afternoon he is on the job already as King Kekaulike High School football coach.

“Changing the culture, making these kids believe and understanding that this is an area that has a lot of potential and we can do something special here,” he said. “That’s what we have got to get these kids to believe in.”

Sanches' hire leaves Kamehameha Maui, where Kevin O'Brien stepped down following the 2012 season, as the only opening in the Maui Interscholastic League.

Sanches, a self described "Upcountry kid," goes deep in the King Kekaulike lore, all the way to taking wood-shop class from former Na Alii coach Dennis Dias at Kalama Intermediate School. Sanches also has a close relationship with athletic director P.K. Higa, twice a head coach for the school.

“Absolutely, I have always looked up to him, coach Dias,” Sanches said. “Meeting P.K. and understanding what he is trying to do with the program, I think I do have some shoes to fill. J.W. (Kenton) winning the Division II state championship (in 2006), too, we do have a legacy, but that is something we do have to continue to build on.”
