HCC riding its familiar keiki division dominance

June 17, 2013 - Robert Collias
Hawaiian Canoe Club finished third in the HCRA state regatta last season — after leading the event going to the final race.

For a club that had won 10 of the last 13 state titles, that wasn't acceptable.

Now, after death and rememberance in the first two regattas, it was back to the age-old plan for the 28-time defendin Maui County champions on Saturday at Canoe Beach:

LAHAINA - It is not often that Hawaiian Canoe Club can say it did something in a Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association regatta for the first time. It is even more rare when that feat involves the keiki division.

For the first time in his 31-year career, coach Paul Luuwai's keiki crews won 14 of 16 races as Hawaiian took the team title Saturday in the Kamehameha Day Regatta at Hanakao'o (Canoe) Beach Park.

"We have never done that - we are just training hard and trying to pay attention to the details," Luuwai said midway through the event. "We are finally at full strength where our full complement of kids are home."
