Lahainaluna's Mataafa gets fourth offer, from UNLV
June 24, 2013 - Robert Collias
Lahainaluna High School's Hercules Mataafa is becoming a sought-after young man.
A reliable source tells me that UNLV is the latest to offer a football scholarship the standout defensive lineman — he previously has offers from Wisconsin, Oregon State and New Mexico State. Certainly, the Wisconsin and UNLV offers come with strong recommendations from Chad Kauhaahaa, defensive line coach for the Badgers, and Jimmy Morimoto, the director player personnel for the Rebels.
Kauhaahaa and Morimoto are both former Baldwin head coaches and standouts.
The list of offers is sure to grow for Mataafa, a 6-foot-4 220-pound rising senior.
Besides being an MIL All-Star and 215 state runner-up in wrestling twice, he comes from a very athletic family: Older sister Gina-Bella Mataafa was a standout wrestler and water polo player little sister Lalelei Mataafa became the first MIL freshman to ever win a state wrestling title this year and was a water polo MIL All-Star as well.
