Update: Lunas' win was not the first state tournament hoops game held on Maui

February 10, 2014 - Robert Collias
In my last blog I wrote that I thought Lahainaluna's dramatic 61-57 win over Maryknoll was the first state tournament basketball game ever played on Maui.

This morning, I was corrected by a nice email from a gentleman named Jon in Colorado (I have deleted his last name for his privacy):

Hello Robert,

I read your blog about the Lahainaluna girls victory with a great deal of interest. I'm hoping that they will bring home a state title.

You did mention that you thought this might have been the first state basketball tournament game played on Maui. I recall that Maui hosted the state tournament in 1966 or 1967 when St. Louis defeated Hilo in the championship game. I spent many hours at the War Memorial gym watching all the games.

Although I have lived in Colorado for many years I cherish my memories of Lahainaluna and Maui.

I enjoy reading your blog.

Thanks, Jon 1971

A look here shows that Saint Louis beat Hilo for the boys crown in 1967 (althought it does not list the venue). BTW, the girls tournament began in 1977 and I have edited my last blog.
