Nakoa, Hoopai leads MIL Softball All-Stars
June 23, 2014 - Robert Collias
Here is the start of my MIL Softball All-Star story (note some emotional stuff from Hana's Jaynalee Hoopai near the bottom):
Sanae Nakoa will be the veteran leader of the Baldwin High School softball team next year.
For the last two seasons, she has simply been the pitcher who has led the Bears to back-to-back Maui Interscholastic League Division I titles.
As a junior, Nakoa guided the Bears to a 14-0 league mark and is the overwhelming choice of the coaches as The Maui News MIL Division I Player of the Year for the second straight season.
"It was really fun this year because we have a really young team and the way we bonded this year was better than the way we bonded last year," Nakoa said. "I know that everyone could be player of the year, but they chose me, so I'm pretty shocked again."
Nakoa is joined on the D-I first team by fellow Bears Skylynne Ellazar, Shyli Puahala-Lau, Nawai Kaupe, Haunani Morton and Gabriella Alonso, King Kekaulike's Kailey Nobriga, Kamehameha Maui's Kaui Uwekoolani, Cheyenne Maio-Silva and Madison Vaught, and Lahainaluna's Lithe Pokipala-Waiohu and Tobi Bonifacio.
Hana junior pitcher Jaynalee Hoopai is MIL Division II Player of the Year after emerging from a crowded race - Molokai, Seabury Hall, Hana and Lanai all tied for the regular-season title at 5-3 before the Farmers emerged as the overall champions.
