Hawaiian continues to hold off Kihei by slimmest of margins
June 29, 2014 - Robert Collias
Here is the start of my story this morning wrapping up the Mayor's Umeke Regatta from Saturday:
KAHULUI - Hawaiian Canoe Club has been threatened this year, but remains in its usual top spot.
The Kahului Harbor-based club is nearing its 30th Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association season title in a row. It has won 82 straight county regattas and 11 of the past 15 state crowns.
But it has rarely been like this. Hawaiian has just a 52-point advantage over Kihei Canoe Club after the Mayor's Umeke Regatta, the fifth of seven events in the county season, after edging KCC 154-148 on Saturday at Kahului Harbor.
