WAILUKU - The Maui Bookmobile will resume service Tuesday, but due to budget cuts it will have a new schedule.
The change includes eliminating service to West Maui, where a state Board of Education committee recently voted to temporarily close the Lahaina Public Library as a cost-cutting measure.
The bookmobile, based at Wailuku Public Library, was temporarily taken out of service in June because of mechanical problems.
Repairs were funded by a grant from the Maui Friends of the Library.
Under its new schedule, the bookmobile will continue to operate Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, but now will rotate every three weeks.
Copies of the bookmobile's fall schedule are available at all Maui public libraries, and can be viewed at www.librarieshawaii.org/pdf/Maui+Bookmobile+FALL+09.pdf.
"The bookmobile brings books and other materials to patrons who do not have easy access to a branch library," said Susan Werner, Wailuku Public Library manager. "It is a very important outreach service but is also expensive to maintain, especially with increasing gasoline costs."
