Happy thoughts for happy plants

October 12, 2012
The Maui News
Hawaiian Canoe Club coach Kauhane Luuwai instructs Seabury Hall paddlers Ben Cooper, 15, (left) and Adam Ferrier, 16, to “think happy thoughts” on Thursday while they plant naupaka plants in front of the canoe hale at Kahului Harbor. The plants donated by Dan Cohan, Maui Nui Botanical Gardens and Hoolawa Farms are being planted as part of a project to help the club anchor its eroding shoreline. The naupaka bushes in combination with pohuehue vines, aki aki grass and a handful of other native plant species have helped build sand in front of the hale. Luuwai pointed to “keiki” or baby naupaka spawned by plants planted three years ago as proof that the project is working.
