Higgins to start for Warriors today

November 16, 2012

The University of Hawaii football team will make a major change in its bid to end a seven-game losing streak.

Jeremy Higgins will be the Warriors' starting quarterback for today's road game against Air Force, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Thursday.

Higgins replaced Sean Schroeder in the third quarter of Saturday's loss to Boise State, and went 11-for-17 passing for 154 yards with an interception and no touchdowns.

Hawaii (1-8, 0-6 Mountain West Conference) is averaging 295.2 yards of offense per game, ahead of just three teams in the Bowl Subdivision. Air Force (5-5, 4-2) is gaining 457.6 yards per game.

The Warriors and Falcons are former Western Athletic Conference rivals, but have not met since a 52-30 victory for UH at Aloha Stadium in 2001. Hawaii coach Norm Chow, however, faced Air Force for decades while an assistant coach at Brigham Young.

"I coached against those guys for 20 years," Chow said Monday in a news conference posted on the UH athletics website. "I played against them actually, as well. They're tough guys. Obviously they are tough guys because they've got to represent our country when they graduate. So, we have to prepare offensively to stay on the field. We can't be getting those three and outs and expect our defense to hold up all afternoon long."
