Regarding the Dec. 30 letter "Past sins should be consigned to history books": This really depends on if the history is yours or not.
I discovered, by taking African-American history in college, that the history books can't be trusted. African-American history in my high school was nonexistent.
The letter writer mentioned that the stronger African tribes sold their own people. Who would they have sold them to if the slave traders never came? Americans actually killed one another by the thousands, for the right to own those slaves. I just saw "Lincoln."
I'm not pointing fingers or trying to blame any present-day person or race. Sometimes the truth hurts, and it should. If you don't feel guilty, then sad facts don't hurt, they strengthen.
