Kihei man charged on drug, gun counts
A Kihei man was arrested after officers found a rifle and drugs during a traffic stop Friday night in Kihei, police said.
Manuel Menendez, 32, was released after posting $4,500 bail. He was charged with keeping a firearm in an improper place, failing to register a firearm, third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, driving under the influence of an intoxicant, possessing drug paraphernalia and driving without a license.
Police said the vehicle Menendez was driving was stopped at 7:40 p.m. on Piilani Highway for having expired registration. When a Kihei patrol officer made contact with Menendez, the smell of burned marijuana was coming from the vehicle and Menendez admitted to having just recently smoked the drug, police said.
A DUI Task Force officer was called to assist in the arrest. After Menendez agreed to a search of the vehicle, police reported finding a .22-caliber rifle that wasn't in a gun case, as well as marijuana and crystal methamphetamine.

Repairs will disrupt pool operations
Emergency repairs to the hot water line at the Lahaina Aquatics Center will close the facility for part of today.
A suspected leak in the hot water line that feeds the center's showers is the cause of the closure, a county news release said.
The water will be shut off at the facility until noon.
The 50-meter pool is expected to reopen at noon, when water service returns.
The keiki pool will remain closed until repairs are completed because it is near to the repair work site.
An update will be provided once a completion date for the repairs has been determined.
