Putting message in plain sight

The Maui News
Joseph Soliven leads the way into Paia for son Damien as they carry crosses last week down Baldwin Avenue. Joseph Soliven has been a fixture along the roads around Paia for years. He said he started running around the town at age 15 when he was an amateur boxer. He boxed in the Army and as a pro on Oahu before returning to Maui. The member of Holy Rosary Church said he walks “for Jesus, to remind people of Jesus so they can come to believe in him.” Damien Soliven said he started walking to be close to his dad, but his reasons have changed. “At first, I just wanted to spend time with him,” the son said. “And now it’s because I see people differently. I want them to see Jesus.” Damien Soliven said he attends church at Hope Chapel North Shore.
