UH on brink of finishing year winless

The University of Hawaii football team will try to avoid the second winless season in program history tonight in a game against Army at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu.

The Rainbow Warriors (0-11) are coming off a 59-56 overtime road loss to Wyoming last week. Sean Schroeder passed for a career high 499 yards and six touchdowns for UH, and Chris Gant tied a school record with four touchdown catches.

Army has not played since a 21-17 home loss to Western Kentucky on Nov. 9.

"We are looking forward to playing," Black Knights coach Rich Ellerson said earlier this week in a news conference on the Army athletics website. "It's been a couple of weeks. We're excited to play, and we know Hawaii is as well."

Ellerson played at UH in the 1970s, and later was an assistant coach with the team.

"It is absolutely unique, and I am a water guy," Ellerson said of the Aloha State. "When I am in Hawaii, I am going to try and be in the water as much as I can. I had a lot of fun playing and doing other things."

Hawaii's only winless season came in 1998, when the team went 0-12 in Fred vonAppen's final season as coach.

The Black Knights (3-7) will have one more game after today's contest - against Navy on Dec. 14.
