'Blessing of the Animals' service planned
Keawala'i Congregational Church will hold its fifth annual "Blessing of the Animals" during a service at 10 a.m. Saturday, according to an announcement.
Churches celebrate the blessing of animals in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi's love for all creatures, the church said. It has become a tradition at the church that the blessing be held in December. Readings, prayers and a blessing will be offered.
Arrangements for the day will take into account the needs of the various animals. Dogs must be leashed at all times, and other animals must be safely contained.
This year's event will include a remembrance of dogs, cats, birds, turtles, rabbits or any other pets. Members of the church's canoe hui will scatter flowers in the ocean in remembrance of pets that have died.
The service is being coordinated through the ministry of the Board of Deacons, with the kokua of church members Cindee Burkitt and Ellen Caringer.
The church is at 5300 Makena Road. For more information, call 879-5557.
