I have to agree with the underwhelmingness of Art Maui as portrayed by an April 17 letter writer.
Art Maui's fatal flaw is its juried selection process. The so-called jury consists of only one self-styled art pundit, usually from somewhere off-island, who brings his or her own unique set of prejudices and preferences.
It would be far better to have a panel of three, preferably five, impartial judges for a more fair and balanced selection process. It could consist of local artists, possibly a pundit and maybe even some local laymen.
