Kamehameha falls to Aiea in double OT

PUKALANI — Time was winding down on a chilly Monday night at Kanaiaupuni Stadium when the ball bounced right to Aiea High School’s Nicole Olanda.

Na Alii’s sophomore striker made the most of the chance, burying the game-winner in the 100th minute of a 2-1 victory over Kamehameha Maui in a Queen’s Medical Center Girls Soccer State Championships Division I first-round game.

“I just wanted to push everything for my team, do it for my seniors this year and make it all the way,” Olanda said after her goal with 10 seconds left on the unofficial scoreboard clock in the second of two 10-minute overtimes.

Kana Mateaki had given the Warriors a 1-0 lead on a header that came after a throw-in from Leialoha Medeiros in the 12th minute. Aiea’s Brianna Yamada tied the game in the 34th.

Kamehameha goalkeeper Makamae Aquino stopped an Aiea chance in the 18th minute, and made a great save on a free kick in the 71st by Olanda. Kailani Kealoha got back to the goal to deny a near-certain goal on a sliding block in the 28th minute, and Yamada also shot high in the 78th minute.

Tessie Tavale was equally impressive in goal for Na Alii (10-2-3). She stopped Medeiros from point-blank range in the 35th and 38th minutes, and denied Shea Watanabe’s rocket shot in the 58th minute.

The Warriors’ Lilia Wietecha-Davis sent a shot over the crossbar in the 55th minute.

In the overtime, both goalies had stellar saves — Tavale snuffed two shots in the box in the 88th minute by Kamalei Roback and Aquino had a similar stop in the 94th on a Yamada attempt.

The ball found its way to Olanda’s foot in the final seconds of the second OT after a misplay in the penalty box by the Kamehameha defense with the blustery wind in its face.

“I watched for their bad touches and I just wanted to execute that goal for my team,” Olanda said.

Aiea advances to play top-seeded Mililani on Thursday on Oahu.

“It was one heck of a game,” said Kamehameha coach Brandon Kotter, whose team finished 8-4-1. “But I’ll be honest, and I told my ladies this, I’m not taking anything away from Aiea, they came over here on a same-day flight, they came into our backyard and they did what they needed to do to walk away with the ‘W.’ But I’ve got to be honest with you, the better team lost tonight.

“We did everything that we needed to do, but I’ve always said that the team that makes the mistakes is going to come up short and the two goals they scored were self-created, we did it to ourselves.”
