The Maui News – Tyler Munetake of Wailuku took the lead on the first hole and stayed in front the rest of the way in defeating Honolulu’s Remington Hirano 1 up on Thursday to reach the quarterfinal round of the Manoa Cup.

Hirano made double bogey on Oahu Country Club’s par-4 first hole. The sixth-seeded Munetake widened the lead with a birdie on the par-5 second, and the advantage eventually grew to 3 up — Hirano, seeded 11th, won the 16th and 17th to stay in contention, but a halved 18th hole ended the match.

Munetake, a Baldwin High School graduate who now plays at Gonzaga — he is a junior-to-be — will next face third-seeded Tyler Ota of Honolulu in the Hawaii State Golf Association amateur championship. The winner of that match will play later today in the semifinals against the winner of an all-Oahu matchup between Evan Kawai and David Saka.
