Rose may join Cavs on one-year deal for veteran’s minimum

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Cavaliers are in contract talks with free-agent guard Derrick Rose, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Thursday.

Rose, whose career has been sidetracked by injuries, could sign a one-year deal for the veteran’s minimum, according to the person, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the talks.

Salary-cap issues limit what Cleveland can offer Rose, who made $21.3 million while playing in 64 games for the New York Knicks last season.

Rose, 28, was the NBA’s MVP in 2011 with the Chicago Bulls. He has averaged 19.5 points and 6.0 assists per game since being drafted first overall by Chicago in 2008, and is a three-time All-Star.

The Cavs signed free agent Jose Cal-deron last month as a backup to All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving. Rose, if healthy, would seem to be a better option than the 34-year-old Calderon.
