Kaiwi, Patterson earn USA Taekwondo medals

Ka’ale Mailou Kaiwi of Kiffmann’s Maui Elite Taekwondo won a silver medal in the boys 8-9 black-belt middleweight sparring division of the USA Taekwondo national championships that took place from June 29 to July 6 at the Cobo Center in Detroit, and Anisha Patterson earned a girls 15-17 junior black-belt bronze.

Kaiwi won three consecutive matches before a loss in the final. He opened with a 14-4 victory over Christopher Flores of New York, then won 18-8 over Texas’ Horacio Ibarra-Sayas before a sudden-victory win over California’s Christian Doucet in the semifinals. Redrick Jaden Sambrano of California won 13-6 in the title match.

Three other Kiffmann black belts went 1-1 — Miles Kiffmann (world class men’s 18-32 featherweight), Lydia Tan (girls 10-11 finweight) and Jericho San Agustin (world class boys 12-14 bantamweight).


Lee takes title at HSJGA event

Chad Lee of Wailuku won the boys 15-18 title in a Hawaii State Junior Golf Association All-Ages Junior Tour Series event Wednesday at Honolulu Country Club.

Lee closed with a 1-over-par 73 for a 3-over total of 147.

Jordan Terada (76) of Kahului finished second, seven shots back.

Jaelin Ishikawa of Pukalani was the runner-up in the girls 15-18 division — she shot 80 in the second round to finish at 157. Kelsey Ota of Oahu carded a 77 for a 154 total.


Adventure Fest trail runs set for Aug. 19

The Xterra Adventure Fest Maui trail runs are scheduled for 8 a.m. on Aug. 19 in the area near D.T. Fleming Beach Park in Lahaina.

Adult trails will be 5 and 10 kilometers, and a keiki 2K course is also offered.

The entry fees until the end of July are $50 for the 10K, $40 for the 5K and $20 for the 2K. Prices for the 10K and 2K will each increase by $5 on Aug. 1. Relay teams for the 5K can enter for $50 per person until July 31, and for $60 after that date.

King Kekaulike football practices scheduled

Practices for the King Kekaulike High School varsity and junior varsity football teams are scheduled for 3:30-6:30 p.m. weekdays at the school’s baseball field in Pukalani, beginning Monday.

A current physical and consent form must be turned in before participating.

Baldwin football practice starts Monday

The first practice for the Baldwin High School varsity and junior varsity football teams is scheduled for 4-6 p.m. Monday at the school’s upper field in Wailuku.

A current athletic physical and assumption-of-risk form are required to participate.
