OLINDA — The Seabury Hall girls volleyball team is not quite where it wants to be, but no one in the Maui Interscholastic League Division II ranks has been able to solve the Spartans.

Seabury Hall rolled past Maui Prep 25-10, 25-11, 25-7 at the Erdman Athletic Center on Tuesday to improve to 8-0 in MIL play.

“I feel like we can never really get to a definitive point,” senior outside hitter Erica Pilotin said after recording 13 kills, four aces and six digs for the Spartans. “I think we always just have to be working hard, looking forward and that’s going to show in our volleyball.”

Seabury Hall’s Ella Connor, a 5-foot-11 freshman, had five kills, 10 digs and three aces; Isabel Bennett added 12 kills, four aces and three digs; Sevilla Leuteneker had six kills and two aces; and Kiana Hyman had 29 assists and an ace.

After rolling in the first set, the Spartans led just 11-9 in the second before a Seabury run — capped by a Pilotin kill — pushed the lead to 18-11. Bennett had two kills in a four-point span to make it 22-11, and an ace by Hyman followed by a hitting error ended the set.

Seabury Hall opened a 7-2 lead on a kill down the middle by Bennett. A dink by Lily Bourlanol brought Na Pueo within 8-3, but the Spartans went on a 4-0 run and cruised from there.

The Spartans are looking to get back to the state tournament after missing out last season, ending a streak that dated back to the first D-II state tournament in 2005.

Said Seabury Hall coach Scottie Zucco: “You’re never where you want to be. You’ve always got your eye on something a little bit bigger and better. We look at north stars as something that is always out there.”

Cassidy Otto, a 5-10 senior, led Na Pueo with five kills.

“With dedication that our girls have started with, we’re going to pull through,” first-year Maui Prep coach Bula Mahiai said. “I look forward for next year’s games and the Spartans just better watch out. That’s all.”

Pilotin was impressed with Na Pueo (2-5), who have won two league matches in a single season for the first time in their history.

“I just think they’ve been doing a really great job, working hard,” Pilotin said. “Their game has definitely improved and we at Seabury Hall have noticed that.”

Mahiai said the Spartans set the tone for the MIL.

“Their program is an awesome program,” he said. “I would like our program to be as good or better than them. With the ladies I have coming in, we can give them a good run for it.”
