Futsal tourney helps Maui Food Bank

A team from King Kekaulike High School won the Maui Futsal Project tournament on Sunday at Jon Garcia Gym in Wailuku.

The tournament, which drew six teams totaling 40 players, was the senior project of Maui High student Chai Cortez, who recently signed a scholarship agreement to play soccer at the University of Oregon.

The tournament raised more than 430 cans of food for the Maui Food Bank.

“One of my goals is to always give back to the community that has supported me through my journey and continue to mentor youth players,” Cortez wrote in an email. “It is such an awesome feeling to be able to give back to the community through such a great sport.”

The runner-up team consisted of Baldwin students: Camille Kimito, Hayden Hawes, Diego Roman, Kassie Inouye and Kaylcie Gaoiran.
