Bears into state semifinals with rout of Mustangs

The Baldwin High School girls water polo team advanced to the semifinals of the Stanford Carr Development, LLC State Tournament with a 16-7 win over Kalaheo on Thursday at the Kamehameha Kapalama pool in Honolulu.

Rebecca Buenrostro-Gallimore scored seven goals for the second-seeded Bears (13-0), who will face the host Warriors in the semifinals today at 5:45 p.m. at Kamehameha Kapalama. The Warriors (7-3) advanced with an 8-6 victory over No. 2 Kahuku.

Jacsen Donohue and Isabella Strand both scored three goals for the Bears, while Jessica Baker had two and Audrey Reiss had one.

The Maui Interscholastic League has never had a team advance to the water polo state championship game. Kapalama has been in seven of the last 10 state finals, including the last three, losing to Punahou all seven times.

Kalaheo (10-7) was led by Mattea Jergovic, who had two goals.
