Firefly increases slim lead over Joy Ride on Day 10 of Vic-Maui

The Division 1 competition of the 2018 Victoria to Maui International Yacht Race continued to be close as the race entered its 10th day, with Firefly increasing its lead over Joy Ride to 27 nautical miles as boats continue their search for trade winds.
The biennial race, known as the Vic-Maui, is officially past the halfway point as Firefly was 804 nautical miles from the finish in Lahaina on Tuesday.
Firefly led Joy Ride by a mere five nautical miles Monday as boats traveled through the North Pacific Gyre, also known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Salient was another 73 nautical miles behind Firefly to lead Division 2, followed by Kraken (144), Turnagain (145), Anjo (205), Serenite (226) and Oxomoxo (253).
In the cruising class, Serenite was 994 nautical miles out.
The event started July 1 in Victoria, B.C., and the time limit for the race ends July 20.
