High school athletic competition canceled today due to Tropical Storm Olivia

All after-school activities for today, including a pair of Maui Interscholastic League volleyball matches, have been called off due to the expected arrival of Tropical Storm Olivia, according to a press release from the Hawaii State Department of Education.

Today’s Maui High School at Kamehameha Maui and Lahainaluna at Baldwin girls volleyball matches — both set for 6 p.m. starts — have been postponed.

Hana High and Elementary School will be closed today.

“We appreciate the scheduling difficulties that school-related cancellations can have, so we ask our parents and guardians to remain flexible and to check HIDOE’s website for the latest updates throughout this week,” Superintendent Dr. Christina Kishimoto said in a press release. “The safety of our students and staff is the highest priority and will guide any decision to alter school schedules.”

There are no MIL sports scheduled for Wednesday, while Thursday has a pair of volleyball matches and an eight-player football game between Lanai and Seabury Hall slated for a 6 p.m. start at War Memorial Stadium.

The HIDOE press release said, in part, “public school schedules and afterschool programming may be modified across the islands this week as (Tropical Storm) Olivia approaches the state.”

Decisions on further cancellations and school closures will be made as necessary, the release said.
