Shields, Volner race to wins on Molokai

Maui High School’s Hunter Shields and Seabury Hall’s Kaylee Volner picked up individual wins Saturday at Maui Interscholastic League cross country meet No. 3 on Molokai.

Shields finished in a time of 17 minutes, 18 seconds, edging teammate Adam Hakola by two seconds. Fellow Sabers Damon Wakefield (17:45) and Connor King (17:55) placed third and fourth, respectively, to help Maui High romp to the team title with 17 points.

The Division II boys team winner was Seabury Hall (65).

Volner won the girls race in 21:25, well ahead of runner-up Sarah Pease (22:58) of King Kekaulike. Na Alii’s Teani Arakawa (23:17) finished third.

The Spartans (87) were the top D-II girls team, while Baldwin (40) topped the D-I standings.

MIL meet No. 4 is next Saturday at King Kekaulike.
