Spartans return to court with sweep of Na Pueo

OLINDA — Like everyone else in the Maui Interscholastic League, the Seabury Hall girls volleyball team missed two days of practice this week.

The Spartans got back to action on Friday and no rust showed in an impressive 25-17, 25-12, 25-12 sweep of Maui Prep at the Erdman Athletic Center.

“All the girls on our team work really hard whenever they’re playing and it’s really fun to play with them,” said sophomore outside hitter Ella Conner after she had five kills, four aces and five digs. “I wouldn’t say that Maui Prep is inexperienced. They are getting better. We just always try to play our hardest and it’s really fun — it doesn’t matter who we’re playing.”

Today, the Spartans will take a trip to Oahu to play Mililani, Castle and Roosevelt.

The plan is simply to improve.

“We’re trying to get the program to move forward a little bit,” Seabury Hall coach Scott Zucco said. “A big part of that means getting some varied competition, getting out to other islands and playing.”

Mention of that trip put a smile on the face of Conner, who plays for Kaulukoa Volleyball Club.

“I’m so excited for that because I play on Oahu,” Conner said. “Most of my club is on Oahu. I have friends on Mililani. I might stay an extra day to hang out with them.”

The Spartans showed their depth all night long against Na Pueo. Madee Dougherty had 19 assists and four digs and Isabel Bennett had 13 kills, three aces and three digs.

Maui Prep is improving under the tutelage of second-year head coach Bula Mahiai, Zucco was quick to point out.

Jolene Munch dished out eight assists, Rebecca Geng had four kills and Keana Villamar had 15 digs for Maui Prep.

Na Pueo have just two seniors on the roster, Geng and Nikki Falk. They trailed just 18-15 late in the first set.

“We have a program going, I believe in it,” Mahiai said. “Give me a couple more years and we’ll be able to compete with my girls.”
