PUKALANI — Madisun Gouyetes’ first goal as a varsity soccer player turned out to be a big one.

The Kamehameha Schools Maui freshman scored in the 11th minute, and it turned out to be the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over Baldwin in a battle of Maui Interscholastic League unbeaten teams on a windy Wednesday night at Kanaiaupuni Stadium.

“It was just a touch, you don’t have to go crazy,” Gouyetes said of her goal that came off an assist from fellow freshman Mackenzie Ventura. “If I hit it harder, it might have gone over. I’m glad I calmed my nerves down a little bit and just tapped it in.

“It felt amazing, being a freshman and scoring my first goal in a varsity game.”

The result left the Warriors at 3-0-0 in MIL play, while Baldwin fell to 2-1-0.

Kamehameha Maui’s Lilia Wietecha-Davis heads a second-half ball Wednesday.

“It was a wonderful game to watch,” said Baldwin assistant coach Matt Snyder, who was in charge of the team with head coach Dave Mena out due to illness. “Tremendous soccer.”

As Baldwin pressed for the equalizer down the stretch, Kamehameha Maui’s Teija Tuitele had a dangerous shot from about 30 yards out in the 51st minute, and Kiana Over had a shot deflected and stopped in the 60th minute.

Gouyetes’ goal came against the wind.

“We just had to make sure that we took care of the ball, maintained the pace of the game and just not get scored on knowing that they had that wind behind their back,” Kamehameha Maui coach Brandon Kotter said. “But it’s the same for both teams — both teams are going to have to go up against it, so it’s just a matter of who takes advantage of it.”
