Bears hand Warriors first defeat of season

The Maui News

The Baldwin High School girls soccer team handed Kamehameha Maui its first loss of the season Tuesday night, defeating the Warriors 2-0 at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku.

Tysja Kaanana scored on a header from a free kick by goalkeeper Malie Kuia, and Bailey Keator converted a penalty kick for the Bears (5-4-0).

The loss dropped Kamehameha to 7-1-1 in Maui Interscholastic League play and makes Saturday’s season-ending game between the Warriors and King Kekaulike (7-1-1) a winner-take-all affair for the MIL title. The match is set to start at 5 p.m. at King Kekaulike Stadium.

If the Warriors and Na Alii tie, the teams will play next Wednesday in a championship playoff game.

Also on Tuesday, the King Kekaulike boys defeated Maui High 2-0 at the Sabers’ field in Kahului.

Tye Miller and Hunter Devlin scored for Na Alii (7-0-1).

The Sabers fell to 2-5-1.
