Thursday–The Maui Oceanfront Marathon’s Free Cookie Run is scheduled for Thursday at 8 a.m. at Kalama Beach Park in Kihei. The untimed fun run is about 2.8 miles long and free to enter. Runners are asked to bring cookies, donuts, bagels, fruit or a case of water to share, and old shoes to donate to the Kihei Youth Center.

Jan. 20–The Maui Oceanfront Marathon will be held on Jan. 20, starting at 5 a.m. at the Shops of Wailea and ending at Kamehameha Iki Park in Lahaina. The marathon also includes special start times for runners 55 years old and over (4:40 a.m.) and others needing extra time to finish by noon (from 3:30 to 4:30 a.m.). In addition, there is a half marathon (6:35 a.m.), 15K (6:35 a.m.) and 5K (8:30 a.m.) — those races all have starting points between Wailea and Lahaina. The entry fee is $130 (marathon), $120 (half marathon), $120 (15K), $80 (10K) and $75 (5K). Discounts available for Maui residents, active military and seniors over 60. Event registration and number pickup will be held on Friday at 2480 S. Kihei Rd., No. 28 in Kihei from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and on Saturday at the Pioneer Inn in Lahaina from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For more information and to register, visit or call 874-5588.

Feb. 2–The Pacific Whale Foundation’s annual Run & Walk for Whales will be held on Feb. 2, with the start and finish at the Maui Harbor Shops in Maalaea. The event starts at 7 a.m. and includes 1-mile, 5K, 10K and 10-miles courses. Online registration runs through Jan. 30 and ranges from $20 (1 mile) to $45 (10 miles). Feb. 16–The inaugural Run of Love 5K is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. on Feb. 16 at Keopuolani Park. The Valentine’s Day-themed race has both individual ($25 registration) and couples relay ($40) sign-ups. The race benefits Kihei Charter athletics. Registration closes at the end of this month. To register, visit



Jan. 29–The USTA Play to Learn youth tennis program’s six-week first spring session will start Jan. 29, with classes held each Tuesday at the Kahului Community Center courts and each Wednesday at the Eddie Tam courts in Makawao. Classes, for beginners and advance beginners, are from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for children ages 12-14, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. for 6-8 and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for 9-11. The fee is $5 for each hour-long session. Jan. 19-20–The 22nd annual Paia Bay Beachfest is scheduled for Jan. 19-20 in front of the Paia Youth & Cultural Center. The bodyboarding competition has eight divisions: menehune (under 14 years old, coed), juniors (14-17, coed), wahine (all ages), kane (all ages), drop knee (all ages, coed), soft-top shootout (under 18, boys and girls divisions), pro-am (all ages, coed) and expression sessions (under 18, boys and girls divisions). Pre-registration will be held on Friday at the PYCC, with an entry fee of $20. Day-of registration is 7-9:30 a.m. on Saturday and costs $30. The first heat is in the water at 8 a.m. following the event blessing ceremony.
