Kama, Ortiz help Sabers edge Lunas

Destiny Kama drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning and Ashanti Ortiz pitched a six-hitter to lead the Maui High School softball team to a 2-1 victory over Maui Interscholastic League leading-Lahainaluna on Saturday at Patsy Mink Field in Kahului.

Maui High (3-4) scored the first run of the game on an error in the bottom of the third inning. Lahainaluna (6-2) responded in the next frame as Tamia Duldulao-Kahaialii hit an RBI single.

The Sabers’ Erin Prieto led off the bottom of the fifth with a line-drive double and later advanced to third on a groundout by Melia Paet. With two outs, Kama singled to right to bring Prieto home. Lahainaluna pitcher Seraya Casco avoided further damage by getting Satsuki Dumlao to ground out to end the inning.

From there, Oritz and her defense held off the Lunas. With two on and no outs in the sixth, the Sabers turned a double play and Ortiz got Alana Koa to fly out to end the threat.

The Lunas got a couple of runners on base again in the seventh, but the game ended on a caught stealing.

Ortiz allowed one run on six hits and three walks while striking out one. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
