Spartan boys, girls hand Bears first losses of season

The Seabury Hall girls and boys tennis teams each handed Baldwin its first losses of the season Saturday at Wells Park in Wailuku.

The Spartan girls defeated the Bears 4-1.

In addition to straight-set wins by Nikki Fernando and Chiemi Powell, the Spartans also got a pair of three-set victories in doubles. Jessica Griffiths and Alexa De Crinis rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Kaui Kennedy and Selena Feike, while Stephani Peterson and Julia Chou lost a close first set before coming back to win 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2.

With the win, Seabury Hall improved to 3-1 in Maui Interscholastic League East Division play. The Bears fell to 3-1.

In the boys match, the Spartans won all three singles matches to beat Baldwin 3-2.

Miles Stone led the way for Seabury, earning a 6-0, 6-0 win over the Bears’ Cody Sears at No. 1. Sterling Sandler and Evan Lipetz also won for the Spartans (3-1).

The Baldwin boys fell to 3-1.
