Lahainaluna rallies to beat Maui High in five innings

The Lahainaluna High School softball team piled up 20 hits and overcame a seven-run deficit to eliminate Maui High 18-8 in five innings in the first semifinal of the Maui Interscholastic League Division I tournament Thursday night at Patsy Mink Field in Kahului.
After trailing 7-0 through two innings, the Lunas finally took control, 14-8, with a six-run bottom of the fourth that was highlighted by RBI singles by Keani Pagan, Daisha Dagdag, Ocean Makaekau and Kaaiana Kalanikau.
Top-seeded Lahainaluna (11-2) ended it on the 10-run mercy rule with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. The season ended for the fourth-seeded Sabers at 6-8.
Nine different Lunas had at least two hits, led by Makekau’s 3-for-4 day that included two doubles and five RBIs.
Maui High bounced on top 7-0 with two runs in the top of the first and five more in the second.
The Lunas exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead — the big blows in the inning came on a two-run double by Kalanikau, an RBI double by Pagan, an RBI triple by Dagdag and Makekau’s RBI double that knocked in the go-ahead run.
Maui High tied it at 8-8 on a home run off the scoreboard by Destiny Kama in the top of the fourth.
