Lenny, Kemper up for WSL Big Wave awards

Maui’s Kai Lenny and Billy Kemper are among the nominees for this year’s World Surf League Big Wave Awards, which were announced Thursday.

Lenny and Kemper are both up for the premier Ride of the Year award, the winner of which receives prizes totaling $102,000.

The Valley Isle surfers’ rides were both from Nov. 26, the first day of the Big Wave Tour’s Jaws Challenge at Peahi. Lenny’s ride was captured on video by Ryan Johnson, while Kemper’s video was by Johnny Decesare.

Kemper went on to win the WSL event for the third time, while Lenny finished second.

Also nominated for Ride of the Year is South African Grant Baker, Basque’s Naxto Gonzalez and Chile’s Ramon Navarro.

Lenny is also nominated for the Men’s XXL Biggest Wave Award, while Kemper is also up for the Men’s Biggest Paddle Award.

Maui’s Paige Alms and Andrea Moller were named contenders along with France’s Justine Dupont for Women’s Biggest Paddle World Record. All three rides were at Jaws.

Alms’ nominated ride was on Oct. 9, 2012, Moller’s was on Jan. 16, 2016 and Dupont’s was on Nov. 26.

The winners will be announced on May 2 at an awards ceremony in Redondo Beach, Calif.
