Maui District athletes win at state rodeo

Seven Maui District cowboys and cowgirls earned wins at the Hawaii High School Rodeo Association Jr. High School State Finals, held May 9-12 at Parker Ranch in Waimea, Hawaii.

Elizabeth Miranda won pole bending and placed third in girls breakaway, earning co-All-Around Cowgirl honors. She also partnered with Frank Bonacorsi to finish third in team roping.

Kahiwa Augustiro took first in four events — boys bull riding, steer saddle bronc, steer bareback bronc and chute dogging — and teamed with Bailey Sproat to take third in ribbon roping. Augustiro was named Reserve All-Around Cowboy.

Miya Lu placed first in shooting .22 light rifle and earned the Courage, Character, Community award.

Kalena Kehano took first in girls breakaway, second in goat tying and third in shooting; Emily Coflin won barrel racing; Bonacorsi placed first in tie down roping and second in steer bareback bronc and shooting; Charles Medeiros took first in boys goat tying and second in boys breakaway; and Chaya Gomes placed third in pole bending.

All top-four finishers in each event qualify for the National Junior High Finals Rodeo (NJHFR), set for June 23-29 in Huron, S.D.


Na Koa Football Camp set for June 13-14

The Na Koa Football Camp is scheduled for June 13-14 at Kamehameha Schools Maui’s Kanaiaupuni Stadium in Pukalani.

The free camp, open to players in grades 5-8, is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. It is being run by Warriors players Tiliti Adams, Kapena Gushikuma and Slade Teshima. Guest coaches are certified Nike trainer David Kamalani, ThePathwayMaui founder Thomas Tonu and former NFL player Joseph Siofele.

Garcia of Lahaina hits hole-in-one at Wailea

Mike Garcia of Lahaina made a hole-in-one on May 17 at the Wailea Emerald Course.

Garcia used an 8-iron to ace the 13th hole from 135 yards. The shot was witnessed by Matthew Giunta.


West of California aces No. 7 at Maui Nui

Mike West of Clayton, Calif., made a hole-in-one on Saturday at Maui Nui Golf Club.

West aced the 181-yard No. 7 with a 4 rescue club. Witnesses were Randy and Mary Morris.
