Kahana thrives on community

Pair of wins in novice races highlight day for Naleieha hosts

LAHAINA — Members of the Kahana Canoe Club community proudly wore their bright green colors Saturday afternoon at Hanakao’o (Canoe) Beach Park, repping their club that has been deeply rooted for over 40 years.

The club was formed in 1976 by Naleieha Hui, a group of families that owned land in Kahana, and since then, the club has grown to around 120 paddlers.

On Saturday, they celebrated at the Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association Naleieha Regatta.

“For me, the biggest part is the community,” Kahana’s Neri Duarozan said. “Without it, there’s no support or foundation at all. … Taking care of the club and also helping each other out, first and foremost.”

Duarozan joined Rodrigo Rodriguez Diaz, Thomas Thomas, James Strickland, Vladimir Porac and Cesar Garcia to win the half-mile men’s novice B race in 3 minutes, 59.53 seconds, well ahead of runner-up Hawaiian Canoe Club (4:06.10). Na Kai Ewalu finished third with a time of 4:06.10.

“That was a fun race,” Kahana coach Paele Kiakona said as the crew pulled its canoe to shore.

The crew’s average paddling experience is only four months, but with the support of the club members and coaches, all crews have been able to improve each week.

“These six guys don’t matter as much as the people who brought them together, I’m convinced of that,” steersman Garcia said. “It starts from the top.”

Assistant coach Kawehi Kaina added, “The bond that they created in just a short time is eye-opening. It doesn’t happen too often.”

Kahana’s men’s novice A crew of Danny Bordin, Zach La Prade, Jonny Varona, Jeremy Baldwin, Ricky Yeckley and Jeremy Stoddart also took home gold, winning in a time of 3:43.93.

In addition to the two wins, Kahana also picked up three second-place finishes (women’s novice A, men’s 55 and men’s sophomore) as well as six third-place finishes (men’s 60 and 70, women’s 70 and mixed 15, 65 and 70).

Hawaiian continued its run toward a 35th straight MCHCA title by winning the regatta with 149 points. Kihei was second with 107 points and Wailea (64) was third.

Hana Canoe Club, whose membership is around 120 but only competed in 10 of the day’s 49 events, left the regatta with two close wins in the keiki ranks — in the boys 13 race (2:00.93) and in the mixed 15 (4:39.49).

Hana’s mixed 15 crew of Jeremiah Piimauna-Beck, Moa Momoa, Makali’i Gonsalves-Cosma, Tu’u Helekahi, Seth Victorine-Dyment and Maya Ploi Blasi edged Hawaiian, which finished in 4:41.20.

“We were in front as we were going down, which gave us confidence,” Momoa said. “When we came out of the turn, all of the other canoes were lined up and it was nerve-wracking. We just gave it our all. We just had to dig deep.”
