Paddling their hearts out

Napili hosts Dougie Tihada Memorial Regatta, stresses values to keiki

LAHAINA — While Napili Canoe Club had a strong showing at their own Dougie Tihada Memorial Regatta on Saturday, the finishes were not what made the day particularly special.

While taking home gold is always fun, Napili keiki coach Nori Tihada teaches his younger crews the values of perseverance, respect and teamwork, and to keep a “family-orientated club.”

“They paddle their hearts out,” Tihada said at Hanakao’o (Canoe) Beach Park during the regatta. “But what we tell all the kids is that, the main thing is they try their best, work hard and have fun with it, that’s the main thing. Leave everything else in the water.”

And as the temperatures heated up, so did the waves.

But the Westside swell didn’t stop the Napili boys 13 crew from taking first. Kaulana Tihada, Aiden Takahashi, Kase Gunn, Ghesiah-Dunes Auwae, Morgan Montgomery Jr. and Kalaeloa Tancayo crossed the finish line in a time of 2 minutes, 4.09 seconds for Napili’s second win of the season in the quarter-mile race.

“I’m happy, we worked hard and did our best,” Auwae said.

The crew bounced back from a second-place finish to Lae’ula O Kai last week at Kahului Harbor, winning on Saturday by over four seconds over runner-up Lahaina.

“We did alright, we had a few mistakes here and there,” Montgomery added. “Overall, we did pretty good. We’ll just practice harder for next week.”

Napili, who hosted Saturday’s regatta that is held in memory of club founder Dougie Tihada, has about 180 members overall.

A few of those members also include the Tihada family.

“We have a good mix of kids and adults this year,” said head coach Joey Tihada, Dougie’s oldest son and Nori’s brother. “Every year when our regatta comes up it’s special because we have a lot of family helping coach and paddling.”

Hawaiian won the regatta with 157 points. Kihei was second with 114 points and Napili — helped by five wins on the day– was third with 63 points.

As the season enters the midway point — this was the third of seven regattas on the Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association schedule — HCC coach Paul Luuwai has his sights on states.

“It’s always a work in progress,” Luuwai said. “We’re looking pretty good. I’m happy with their performance so far today, the keiki held their own. … We have 32 seats qualified out of 40 races. … We’re trying to get these other groups qualified, but it’s still too early to tell.”
