Orquia, Brown look to Futures

KIHEI — They took different paths to get there, but Jordynn Brown and Aaren Orquia can’t wait to get to the USA Swimming Futures Championships in Gresham, Ore., in a couple weeks.

The pair of Hawaii Swim Club swimmers will each miss the first few days of their junior years at Maui High School because they will take part in the national-level meet that will be held at four regional sites Aug. 1-4.

“That’s a really big accomplishment,” HSC coach Reid Yamamoto said. “They’ve been working real hard and it’s kind of a testament to their hard work, especially for Aaren. He’s been chasing this a couple months now. I’m happy he got it on Friday. Jordynn already had the cut, so we’re just training through this meet.”

Orquia qualified for the meet in one of his final opportunities when he touched in 58.2 seconds in the 100-meter butterfly preliminaries on Friday. Brown recorded qualifying times in the 200 free, and 100 and 200 backstrokes earlier this spring.

“I just want them to try to improve their times,” said Yamamoto, who is also the pair’s coach for Maui High. “Just soak in the experience and have fun at the same time. This is a steppingstone to the next level, which is the junior national meet.”

Both wrapped up a regimen that included eight events in four days on Sunday at the Hawaii State Age Group Long Course Championships at Kihei Aquatic Center.

“It felt really good because I did it in prelims,” Orquia said of his breakthrough time. “It was really lifted off of me. … I was probably chasing that for, like, four months.”

Brown was trying to add a fourth qualifying mark for the Futures meet in the 400 free on Sunday. While she dominated in winning her 400 free heat in 4 minutes, 35.59 seconds, it was about eight seconds off the time needed to add to her event list in Gresham.

“It’s going to have to be next year,” Brown said of her wish to qualify in the 400. “I think considering everything I have done pretty well (at state). I haven’t been that hard on myself because all I came in here to do was just race and I feel like I’ve done that. … I have a couple qualifying times, but I’ve been really focused on my 400 free.”

Orquia, who is a 5-foot-4, 110-pound 15-year-old, said that it didn’t take long for him to realize he had just qualified for his first national-level meet.

“It’s really cool, but it’s kind of scary because everybody is, like, taller than me,” Orquia said.

He admitted he was tired after finishing his 400 free in 4:27.82, which was eighth in his heat. It was his seventh event of the meet and he needed a time under 4:10 to qualify.

“I was still going to try get to Futures for this event, but I swam 200 fly and 100 back before this and it just made me really tired,” Orquia said. “I still tried my best.”

Orquia said that having just one event at the Futures meet may be beneficial.

“It’ll help me because I don’t have to worry about any other swim except that, so I can just concentrate,” he said.

Both swimmers will now taper their workouts to be rested and ready for Futures. Brown is ready to go.

“Yes, so far, this is the biggest meet I will have been to,” Brown said. “I’m very excited, actually. I have been looking forward to it since the beginning of summer, I think.”

The workout partners will be buoyed by the presence of their friend on the road.

“It was cool because I know he’s been working really, really hard at practice to make his cut,” Brown said of Orquia. “And he was so close, so every time he missed it I felt so bad for him. I was so happy when he made it and I’m happy that he gets to come too.”
