Lahainaluna grad Loewen cut by Lions

Mitchell Loewen, a Lahainaluna High School graduate and the third Maui-born player to appear in an NFL regular-season game, was one of 12 players released by the Detroit Lions on Friday.

Loewen had three tackles and a quarterback hit in Detroit’s 20-16 loss to Cleveland in the final preseason game on Thursday.

Loewen appeared in three regular-season games for the New Orleans Saints — two in 2017 and one in 2018 — before being released and picked up by the Lions in December. He followed Baldwin graduates Kaluka Maiava and John Lotulelei to appear in the NFL.

Fellow Lahainaluna graduate Hercules Mata’afa was still on the Minnesota Vikings roster on Friday evening.

The final cuts to the 53-man roster size must me done by 10 a.m. HST today.
