Aug. 30–The County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation Central District has extended the application deadline for its 3-on-3 Blue Court Youth Basketball Challenge to Aug. 30. The free tournament, set for Sept. 13-14 at several Central Maui courts, will have three divisions–ages 8-10, 13 and younger, and 17 and younger. Outdoor courts to be utilized will be Waikapu Park, Richard “Pablo” Caldito Ballpark and the Kahului School Park. Space is limited to the first eight registered boys and girls teams for each age group. Aug. 24–The County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation will be hosting a free pickleball tournament on Aug. 24 at the Lahaina Civic Center Pickleball Courts. The round-robin tournament is free and open to the public, and will start at 3:30 p.m. with a meeting to go over the tournament rules. Each entrant will be paired with a different participant and guaranteed a minimum of seven games. The deadline to enter is Thursday. Tournament entry forms and waivers can be found at mauicounty.gov/parks or at the parks office in Lahaina. Friday–Tryouts for Maui Titans Fastpitch Softball is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, and Aug. 23-24 at the Baldwin High School softball field in Wailuku. Tryouts are open to players ages 12-16, as of Jan. 1, 2020. The team is for those committed to travel softball with the goal of playing in college. An informational meeting is set for Monday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the MECO auditorium. Workouts are from 4-6:30 p.m. on Fridays (Aug. 16 and 23) and 9-11:30 a.m. on Saturdays (Aug. 17 and 24). The Aug. 16 and 24 sessions focus on speed and offense, while the Aug. 17 and 23 sessions focus on quickness and defense. Players are required to attend one Friday and one Saturday session. A parent or guardian must register and sign a waiver form prior to the attending player’s first workout. Players should bring softball gear and drinks.
