Former Mauian Lopez wins Futures titles

Former Maui resident Rylie Lopez won two events and took silver in another at the USA Futures Championship in Des Moines, Iowa, last week.

Lopez, who swam for Island Aquatics on the Valley Isle before moving to Austin, Texas, a couple of years ago to get more advanced training, won the 400-meter freestyle (4 minutes, 18.57 seconds) and 400 individual medley (4:55.32).

The 17-year-old also placed second in the 800 free (8:55.94) and seventh in the 100 free (58.57) and 200 IM (2:23.92).

Last month, Lopez swam an Olympic trials qualifying time of 2:01.66 in the 200 free. The U.S. Olympic Team Trials, which decide the swimmers who will represent the U.S. in the Tokyo Games, are set for June 21-28.
