Oct. 7–Albatross Golf Adventures will hold its inaugural tour celebratory event on Oct. 7, from 7-10 p.m. at Mulligans on the Blue in Wailea. Albatross, a new golf excursion company, is holding the event as a benefit for The First Tee of Hawaii, a keiki program that uses golf to teach life lessons and leadership skills. The benefit will raise money to start a Maui chapter of the program. The event includes a silent auction, cocktails, pupus and entertainment by Henry Kapono and Kathy Collins. It will also feature appearances by former Major League Baseball player Jose Canseco, former NFL quarterback Jim McMahon and fitness model Zoe Klopfer. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased at Beauty Spa Maui in Kihei or by calling 250-1943.
Jan. 1–The Sentry Tournament of Champions is seeking volunteers for the PGA tournament set for Jan. 1-5. There are various fields that prospective volunteers can be grouped, including On-Course Marshal, ShotLink (includes both walking scorer and laser operator), admissions and information, on-road transportation and on-course transportation. Jan. 16–The Maui Oceanfront Marathon’s Free Cookie Run is scheduled for Jan. 16 at Kalama Park at 8 a.m. Participants are asked to bring cookies and snacks to share, as well as wear old shoes — as they will get wet — that can be donated to the Kihei Youth Center after the event.
Jan. 19–The Maui Oceanfront Marathon is scheduled for Jan. 19, starting at 5 a.m. in Wailea and ending at Kamehameha Iki Park in Lahaina. Early starts begin at 4 a.m. and 4:40 a.m. (seniors 55 and over). The race also includes a half marathon (6:35 a.m.), 15K (6:35 a.m.) and 5K (8:30 a.m.). Event registration and number pickup is set for Jan. 17 at 2480 S. Kihei Rd #28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Jan. 18 at the Pioneer Inn in Lahaina from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Kamaaina, senior and military discounts are available. Sept. 21, 28–Hawaii Pearls Maui will be holding softball tryouts on Sept. 21 and 28 at the Lahainaluna High School field. Tryouts are at 9-10 a.m. for the 10U division, 10:30-1:30 p.m. for the 12U and 13U divisions, and 2-4 p.m. for the 14U and 16U divisions. Only one day is mandatory, but both days are open to everyone. Players should bring their own equipment and a water bottle — a water jug will be provided. Monday–The USTA “Play to Learn” tennis program’s fall sessions are set to begin Monday and Nov. 4. Each session is six weeks and costs $30 for youth and $56 for adults. Youth beginner (ages 6-8, 9-11) and advance beginner (9-14) classes are offered at Kahului Community Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and at the Eddie Tam Courts in Makawao on Wednesdays. Sept. 26-27–Drop-in rates are available for the High Powered Doubles Tennis Camp with the Bryan Brothers on Sept. 26 and 27 at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch. The rate is $850 a day, and is open to locals and tourists. The camp is being instructed by Bob and Mike Bryan — the most successful men’s doubles team of all time — and legendary doubles player and former U.S. Davis Cup and Olympic coach Tom Gullikson.
