UH’s Byrd, Rasmussen earn weekly conference honors

The Maui News

University of Hawaii wide receiver Cedric Byrd and outside hitter Jolie Rasmussen were named Player of the Week for their respective conferences and sports Monday.

Byrd won the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week award for his performance in the Rainbow Warrior football team’s season-opening 45-38 win over Arizona on Aug. 24. The senior from Los Angeles set career highs with 14 receptions for 224 yards while tying a school record with four touchdown catches.

After a bye week, UH returns to Aloha Stadium on Saturday to host another Pac-12 opponent in No. 23 Oregon State.

Rasmussen started her UH career with a bang, posting 57 kills, 17 digs and 13 blocks in the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team’s first three matches of the season over the weekend to earn Big West Player of the Week honors. The Oregon transfer led Hawaii to upsets of No. 21 San Diego and No. 13 Washington, as well as a victory over St. John’s in the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic.

At 3-0, the Rainbow Wahine entered the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 poll at No. 20 on Monday. They next host the Rainbow Wahine Invitational, playing Thursday against Army, Friday against Sacramento State and Sunday against Denver.
