Baldwin, Kamehameha boys to roll off for MIL crown

The Baldwin High School and Kamehameha Maui boys bowling teams are headed to a roll-off.

At the end of Maui Interscholastic League regular season play Saturday at Maui Bowling Center, both squads stood at 16-8, forcing a playoff match next Saturday.

Kamehameha Maui could have clinched the title outright with a sweep of King Kekaulike, but Na Alii — last year’s champion — played the role of spoiler by beating the Warriors 2-1.

Gavin Brittain bowled a 161 to lead King Kekaulike, which finished just a game back of the the Warriors and Bears at 15-9. Trevor Onaga had a 153 and Spencer Birch added a 151.

Kamehameha was led by Anson Cabello’s 176. Jasyah Macugay added a 156.

Baldwin got a 187 from Christopher Keanini-Higa in defeating Maui High 2-1. Kainalu Torres-Estores had a 175 and Jarin Tateishi a 171 for the Bears.

Zachary Domingo (194-177), Jeremy Peros (170) and Cy Fernandez (168) led the way for the Sabers (13-11).

Four-time MIL girls champion Kamehameha Maui (21-3) finished off its season with a 2-1 win over King Kekaulike.

Tahan Valdez and Nadia Apo-Takayama each bowled high games of 149, and Keala Ching added 132 for the Warriors. Na Alii (1-23) were led by Mahiole Austring (155).

Also on Saturday, the Baldwin girls closed with a 2-1 victory over Maui High.

Kailee Kaupu-Hanks led the Bears (15-9) with a 132. Jailee Fujita had a 128, and Kalena Torres-Estores and Janelle Dee each bowled a 126.

The Sabers (14-10) got a 134 from Tiana-Lei Juan, and a pair of 122s from Kalnea Hiranaga and Schuyler Barcoma-Suyat.
