When Peahi calls, they will be ready

First photo: Maui waterman Kai Lenny throws a shaka while posing for photos at the opening ceremony for the Jaws Big Wave Championships on Wednesday at Peahi. The competition window for the World Surf League Big Wave Tour event starts Friday and ends on March 31. Lenny was last year’s men’s runner-up to fellow Maui surfer Billy Kemper, who has won three BWT events at Peahi. Second photo: Female competitors Annie Rickert (from left), Andrea Moller, Izzi Gomez, Paige Alms, Skylar Lickle and Keala Kennelly pose atop the cliffs overlooking the Peahi surf spot known as Jaws. Alms is a two-time Jaws women’s champion, while Kennelly is the defending champ. Third photo: Rodney Kilborn welcomes surfers and supporters to the opening ceremony. Looking on is Kilborn’s granddaughter Kailey Kilborn. Fourth photo: Surfers join dignitaries for a group photo.
