Apo-Takayama posts best score among MIL bowlers at state championships

Nadia Apo-Takayama of Maui Interscholastic League champion Kamehameha Schools Maui was the top MIL finisher at the Billy Tee’s/HHSAA Bowling State Championships, held Thursday and Friday at Lihue Bowling Center on Kauai.

Apo-Takayama finished with an eight-game total of 1,355 to place 28th among girl competitors. She was the only MIL bowler — boy or girl — to finish in the top half of her division and led the Warriors to a ninth-place finish out of 10 teams with a total of 5,418.

The top boy bowler from the MIL was Maui High’s Cy Fernandez (1,388), who finished in 64th place, one spot ahead of teammate Zachary Domingo (1,382).

The MIL champion Kamehameha Maui boys team placed ninth out of nine teams with a total of 5,695.

Iolani (7,387) won its second straight girls team title, easily beating out runner-up Moanalua (7,021) and Kapolei (6,965).

Kapaa junior Dana Murata ran away with the girls individual title, her 1,744 total well ahead of Kapolei’s Shaylynn Matas (1,642) and Pearl City’s Christine Madrona (1,637).

The Campbell boys claimed their first-ever state bowling title with a total of 7,958. Saint Louis (7,929) was second and Mid-Pacific (7,646) third.

Kapolei’s Tylan Kim-Arellano edged Pearl City’s Shaine Fuji 1,845-1,841 to win the boys individual crown. The Hurricanes’ Jake Brett (1,803) was third.
