Atwell, Rewers lead UH past San Diego State

The Maui News

Amy Atwell and Lauren Rewers each had a double-double, and the University of Hawaii women’s basketball team opened the season with a 61-58 victory over San Diego State on Tuesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

Atwell had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Rewers added 16 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks to lead the Rainbow Wahine.

UH made just six of 31 3-point attempts, but Atwell drained one when the Rainbow Wahine needed it most.

With the score tied at 56 with under a minute to play, Atwell grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed 3-pointer by Julissa Tago. The junior forward then hit a go-ahead 3 with 29 seconds remaining, and later made two free throws to put UH up by three points with six seconds left.

Sophia Ramos’ 3-point attempt at the buzzer bounced off the rim for SDSU.

Ramos finished with 14 points to lead the Aztecs.

Hawaii next plays at Loyola Marymount on Nov. 13.
