With just three days remaining at the Vissla ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in Huntington Beach, Calif., Hawaii is one of just three teams with all their surfers still in contention.

Five surfers from Maui represent Hawaii, with all but one trying to survive in the repechage rounds. Spain and Australia also have all of their surfers still in contention.

Jackson Bunch put up a strong two-wave score of 16.20 in the fourth round of the boys under-16 event Thursday to win his heat and advance in the main draw.

Meanwhile Kai Paula, also in the boys U16, will compete in the fourth repechage round after dropping out of the main draw Wednesday.

Ocean Macedo of Lahaina catches a wave in front of the pier.

In the boys U18 division, Ocean Macedo fell into the repechage rounds after placing third in his fourth-round heat with a 12.00. He will next surf in the sixth repechage round.

Set to compete in the boys U18 fourth repechage round is Levi Young, who was last in his third-round heat.

Savanna Stone also dropped into the repechage rounds Thursday when her 11.16 left her in third place in her girls U18 fourth-round heat. She will take on Spain’s Julia Gonzalez in the sixth repechage round.

There are six main-event rounds and 10 repechage rounds of competition before the final.

Also competing in the championships are Maui’s Jeffrey and Finn Spencer, who are representing Canada. Both are in the fourth repechage round of their respective division — Jeffrey is in the boys U18 event, while Finn is in the boys U16 competition.
