Paula, Young stay alive at ISA World Juniors

Kai Paula of Hana surfs during the Vissla ISA World Junior Surfing Championship on Friday in Huntington Beach, Calif. Paula’s score of 11.17 was good enough to win his heat in the sixth repechage round of the boys under-16 division, moving the Team Hawaii surfer on to the next round. With the main event on hold, fellow Maui surfer Jackson Bunch remains slotted to compete in the boys U16 fifth round. In the boys U18 division, Ocean Macedo was eliminated after placing third in his sixth repechage round heat, while Levi Young advanced to the seventh repechage round with a second-place finish in his fifth repechage heat. In the girls U18 event, Savanna Stone is set to compete in the sixth repechage round. Meanwhile, Jeffrey and Finn Spencer — Maui surfers who were representing Canada — bowed out in the fourth repechage round of the boys U18 and U16 divisions, respectively.
