Atwell leads Rainbow Wahine to road win over Huskies

Amy Atwell recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, and the University of Hawaii women’s basketball team picked up a 62-50 road win over Washington on Sunday in Seattle.
Atwell hit five 3-pointers to lead the Rainbow Wahine, who improved to 5-5 despite losing the turnover battle 22-11 — 13 of UH’s turnovers were via Huskies steals.
Nae Nae Calhoun scored 14 points — she went 8 for 8 from the free-thrown line — and Jadynn Alexander added 12 for Hawaii.
The Rainbow Wahine started the game on a 9-0 run and led 15-6 after the first quarter. The Huskies rallied to take a 15-14 lead before Julissa Tago’s 3-pointer with 6 minutes, 7 seconds to go in the half gave UH a lead it would not relinquish.
Hawaii was ahead 27-22 at halftime, and the ‘Bows grew their lead to 43-31 on a fastbreak layup by Atwell with 55 seconds left in the third quarter. Their largest lead came after Atwell’s 3 with 9:06 to play put them up 49-33.
Mai-Loni Henson had 14 points to lead the Huskies (4-2), who shot just 22.6 percent (19 of 84) from the field, including 13.8 percent (4 of 29) from behind the arc.
The Rainbow Wahine next host Hope International on Dec. 15.
